The Climax of I Want You Women Up North to Know :: Want You Women Up North to Know
Lines 85-97 of Tillie Olsen's originally distributed sonnet I Want You Women Up North to Know contain the climactic defining moment of this sonnet, and the language and structure mirror this change. Rather than being modest and disconnected casualties who remain for the most part mysterious, the laborers are changed into an irate and brought together gathering of particular people. This move in state of mind is cultivated by three gadgets: symbolism, gathering, and capitalization of legitimate names. The symbolism in this entry helps turn the tone of the sonnet from exploitation to outrage. Notwithstanding fire pictures, the general language is totally stripped down to exposed grotesqueness. In past lines, the shamefulness has been intermixed with sprightly code words: the horrifying work is a lovely move (24); the trembling hands are white gulls (22); the hack is gay (25). In any case, in these later lines, all stylishly satisfying terms evaporate, leaving sweet and â⬠¦blood (85), nakedâ⬠¦ [and]â⬠¦bony kids (89), and a skeleton body (95). Another way this entry turns the mind-set of the sonnet is by utilizing gathering and structure to interface the laborers together, both in derivation and appearance. Beforehand, each workerââ¬â¢s circumstance has been treated as a disconnected story, truly isolated from the others by a clear line. In any case, lines 85-97 are packed together without spaces, proposing solidarity by the very appearance of the lines. The entirety of the complaints are quickly rehashed, and afterward a grouping of ands ties the one-sentence recaps together. However notwithstanding this feeling of solidarity, each personââ¬â¢s story is given its own sentence with a period limit, unobtrusively stressing their individual significance: solidarity is worthy, yet namelessness isn't. A last noteworthy gadget in this entry is the utilization of capitalization. The best possible names of the laborers have been inconsistently promoted before in the sonnet, however here they are on the whole steady and right. Once more, this is an accentuation on singular significance, a request that every one of these individuals merits an interesting appropriate name. The previous every single lowercase name like catalina rodiguez (16) really mix into the lines of verse, proposing hunkering and lack of definition, yet here the capitalized letters in their names stand apart plainly from different words. Curiously, despite the fact that the individual names are promoted, christ (96) is left in lowercase, like the past treatment of god (57, 60, 62). This appear differently in relation to the capitalization of the workerââ¬â¢ names suggests that God and Christ have bombed the laborers and are currently dominated by a maturing fearlessness in the laborers.

Borobudur Stpa Essay Example For Students
Borobudur St?pa Essay The splendiferous landmark Borobudur which stands encompassed by volcanoes in the Kedu plain in focal Java is apparently probably the noblest structure to have sprung from the Buddhist confidence and is one of the universes best strict founda tions. It stands to pass on a remarkable impression of a definitive serenity which Buddhism bears to its devotees. That it does so is a compositional accomplishment of the most elevated request and vouches for the fruitful way wherein structure and embellishment have been dealt with together to deliver a reasonable entirety. Extraordinary inventiveness is exhibited in the spread out. It is the main stupa in Java which is wealthy in different sorts of Buddhist landmarks. It is a one of a kind result of virtuoso and it is this uniqueness which makes its understanding so troublesome. The stQpa of Borobudur returns eleven centuries. In around 800 a.d. a ruler of the Sailendra Dynasty deified his confidence in the Buddha in an unexampled landmark, imagined and concretised by a writer, thinker, and modeler, named Gunadharma. Gunadharma sallied forward into the mountains of Menorch, his heart cheerful in the expectation of transcreating veneration along the way of ceaseless time. Gunadharma, after a long reflection and an indepth investigation of the incomparable Buddhist Classics, imagined the Borobudur as we probably am aware it today. Custom has it that the planner Gunadharma is incorporated into the mountain scope of Menorch, where you can see the outline of his jawline, mouth and nose. The name of the Borobudur has been a puzzler. Some have gotten bara from vihdra meaning a complex of sanctuaries and mona steries, and budur messengers the Balinese word beduhur importance above. Accordingly the word connotes a high, prominent or preeminent mona stic complex.1 Prof. Casparis clarifies it as a condensing of a com pound word which implies, The religious communities of the accumulationâ of prudence in the ten otherworldly stages in the contemplation of a Bodhi sattva 2 Whatever the beginning of the word, it represents the ten phases in keeps an eye on climb from the baser universe of desire and energy into the most noteworthy domains of iiinyatd, which are known as daSa-blmmi or it might likewise remain to mean date kuâ £altini* specifically the ten sins: pdnalipdto (murdering); adinndddnam (taking); kdmesu mikkliaknro (polluting influence); musdvddo (lying); pisund-vdkd (defame); pharusdvakd (unforgiving language); samphdppaldpo (unimportant talk); abfiigglia (avaricious ness); vydpddo (malignance); mikklidditthi (bogus principle) in the Buddhist way of thinking. A step case with richly enriched passages prompts the highest point of the landmarks from the center of each side of the square. The six are kdma, vedaiid, sanita, dsvds, kamma, and dukkJia The storm cellar has 160 reliefs which have been drawn from a strict book, the Mahakarma Vibhanga. This content arrangements with the Buddhist arrangement of remunerations and punishments for good and bad activities, a framework subsumed in the term karma7 which has been deciphered freely as destiny. Both the idea of the content and the il lustrations of it, which are found on Borobudur, clarify that it is tended to principally to laymen whose work in Buddhism is to pick up merit by supporting the priests. .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .postImageUrl , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .focused content zone { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:hover , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:visited , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:active { border:0!important; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; haziness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:active , .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:hover { murkiness: 1; progress: darkness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relative; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enrichment: underline; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; fringe range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: intense; line-stature: 26px; moz-fringe sweep: 3px; content adjust: focus; content enhancement: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a 12fc35f5b0 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .uf030a22b0193130115d68a12fc35f5b0:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Craft and Art EssayFrom the universe of interests or of kdma we arrive at the universe of riipa dhdtu or Form.8 It comprises of four square displays or porches, with a chain of enormous specialties, which contain Buddha pictures, culi minating in small scale stupas.â The four square patios in Buddhist way of thinking may likewise re present dwthvdrydrya satydm? diatitfralokapdldh10 to be specific the Four Guardians of the World; dhaturattho, virulho or virulhako, virupakkho, vessavano or chatxtirobraUmavilidrah, the Four Perfect States or diatvdri saiigrahawstuni;12 the Four Elements of Popularity or diat vdki smrthya prasthdndni;13 t he Four Earnest Mediations to be specific kdydnu-passamid, iedandmi-passafind, kittdtiu-passannd and dhammdnu passatvid; or dxatvdri-samyakprahandni, the Four Right Exertions. Be that as it may, an increasingly intricate religious philosophy develops when we consider the Buddha figures cherished in the specialties on the exteriors. On each side of the landmark there are 92 sculptures orchestrated in four lines which relate with the four porches. The figures speak to: situated Mdnu$i-Buddha$ and Dhydni-Buddlias Akshobhya, Ratna Sambhava. Amitdbha and Amogha Siddhi who are related with the four cardinal focuses. The legends of Maitreya and Saman tha-bhadra are additionally etched in the third and fourth patios. Over these four-overlap positions there is a fifth line regular to all sides of the landmark whose specialties house Vairochana. The dividers of the porches are embellished with reliefs depicting life scenes and Jatakas in exactitude to the writings urged in Jdtakamdla, Avaddnas Lalitavistara, and Gandavyuha. Top Innovation Sins and How to Avoid Them
Top Innovation Sins and How to Avoid Them © Shutterstock.com | Ruslan GrumbleIn this article, we will start with 1) an introduction to innovation and continue then with 2) a list of innovation sins.INTRODUCTION TO INNOVATIONIf you can take anything away from Mooreâs law and the rate of growth in computers, it would seem that some innovation is perpetual. With the speed of developing technologies now reaching breakneck speeds, it seems as though humanity is now entering the true age of innovation and productivity. Never before has the world witnessed so many new and different products and technologies as the ones that are available at this very moment. While technology itself will continue to grow at an extraordinary rate, the way and speed at which humans provide new and useful innovation does not have the same luxury. The innovation created by people is different to that which is created by machines. People are limited by their cognition, their circumstances and their creativity.Innovators today are subject to what many r efer to as the sins of innovation. Despite the most earnest intentions, people and companies are excellent at creating the own biggest barriers to productivity, creativity and innovation all on their own. Whether they are too quick to give up or standing to close to see the real problem, the issues that many innovators face do not lie within the technology itself. The problems are part of the way technology is approached. The following article contains a list of the top sins that anyone could commit while trying to create and build new technologies, services and products. From spending too much time on useless products to making a problem more complicated than it needs to be, here are the top innovation sins that you can commit and how to avoid them.Innovation Sin #1: GIVING UP TOO EARLYWhether in life or in innovation, people often feel like they are traveling down a fruitless path that is about to come to an end. The path to creation is often filled with blockades, twists, turns an d forks in the road. With so many choices to make and obstacles to overcome, it sometimes feels like it would be much easier simply to start from the beginning and find a different path.Sometimes you can have an idea or create a product that seems like an amazing opportunity upon conception. But when you begin to sort out the details, problems arise at every opportunity. It is easy to believe that these problems exist because the idea is ridden with faults and is not worth pursuing.Other times, everything seems to be going well but for some reason, your business is just not seeing the results you want. Whether there has been a change in the consumer market or you find yourself with more competition, there are plenty of highly successful products that fall off the face of the Earth. The key to being a great business is to recognize perceived failure as an opportunity to do better and try again. Instead of giving up in a difficult climate, taking a successful product or brand and adapt ing it to a new market can turn a difficult situation around. From technology companies to websites to retail chains, the market is full of examples of companies that were wildly successful before dropping off the map. Motorolaâs mobile devices are the perfect example of a company that gave up too early. The Motorola Razr dominated the mobile phone markets from 2004 onwards. The only Americans who did not own at least one Razr were ones who were still saving their money for a new one. The Razr sold 50 million units between its launch in 2004 and summer in 2006.Customers marveled at how thin the phone was. They loved the slight but functional design and the Razr was the signal the market needed that customers wanted smaller phones. However, the user interface was not innovative and it did not offer any new features that similar phones didnât have. When Apple came along with the iPhone, Motorola had the opportunity to step up its game and take its much loved design into the smart pho ne market. However, instead of putting in the work to maintain its huge market share, Motorola continued to release slightly varied versions of its signature. Motorola left a gap in the market that Apple greedily snapped up while still leaving space for Samsung, Sony and even Nokia.Itâs true that the MotoQ signaled a return of Motorolaâs popularity. However, instead of indulging in Android, Motorola turned to Windowâs failing attempt at a mobile operating system rather than what the market wanted.Innovation Sin #2: CREATING PRODUCTS THE CUSTOMER DOESNâT NEEDMarket research and planning is an essential part of creating an innovative product. It provides valuable insight into what the customer both wants and needs. There is little point in creating a product that you consider to be innovative if it is never adopted by your market.Almost every company struggles with the how much influence market research and planning should have on the innovation of its products. Some companies have taken a Steve Jobs approach and insisted that customers have no idea what they want until you show it to them. This approach is useful in some cases but it cannot be universally applied to every scenario. Not only is it bad for innovation and productivity, it is bad for the brand. The kind of brand power that Apple has been able to manifest for itself in the last 15 years is a rare luxury afforded only to certain super brands. The damage that this thinking can do is astounding, even within popular consumer technology. The well-documented struggles that Microsoft has faced to force its Xbox One to compete with Sonyâs PlayStation 4 is the perfect example of this. There is a fine balance between showing customers what they never knew they needed and handing them something they never needed at all. The latest incarnation of Microsoftâs Xbox console was innovative and there is little evidence to dispute about this fact. However, the hardcore gamer market that Microsoft has previo usly served so well had no interest in the mandatory Kinect device. When they learned that the Kinect was always on in some form, the customers were more than happy to let Microsoft know how unhappy they were. The mandatory Kinect device was included in the bundle to encourage customers to take advantage of the voice and motion activated functions that were built into the new Xbox. These functions are certainly innovative. The new Kinect was so well designed that the company would demonstrate its capabilities by printing images of faces captured by the Kinect with a 3D printer. The Kinect was also to signal a key turn from Microsoftâs hardcore gamer customer base towards a more family-oriented entertainment console. However, instead of picking up millions of new customers with its innovative technology, Microsoft alienated its main clientele who then kicked up such a storm that before they knew it, most of the world believed that Microsoft was spying on them through the Kinect that was always listening. The backlash was so intense that Microsoft ended up removing the technology that they had spent years building. Even after Microsoft announced the responsive changes, the Xbox Oneâs sales suffered significantly at launch. In this case, showing their customers something they never knew they wanted drove a huge portion of their customers straight into Sonyâs waiting arms. Sony, on the other hand, had created the innovations that their customers wanted. They made certain that their product was ready for a heavy influx of former Xbox customers.Innovation Sin #3: LETTING BUREAUCRACY STAND IN THE WAY OF PROGRESSRules and bureaucracy are not designed to inherently stand in the way of progress â" but the way some people use them can make them do just that. Organizations that continue to operate with a top-down management strategy often stifle innovation because there is no space for ideas to be heard. When bureaucracy remains interested in control rather than chang e, progress takes a back seat.In these cases, employees have to go through red tape and several committees to express ideas for innovative change. The processes in place to control quality end up taking up a huge amount of time. When the path to innovation has so many roadblocks, it is hard to maximize innovation. If an idea has to move through several committees to be considered, it can take weeks to move from the âprojected start timeâ to the actual start time.Preventing bureaucracy is the battle cry of many of todayâs tech startups. Silicon Valleyâs biggest, brightest and most disruptive startups have worked hard to alleviate the problems inherent in the top down management style.Setting up open campuses and using collaborative online tools to create projects are more than just side effects of the explosive technology industry. They are symptoms of a bigger movement within modern business.Todayâs tech companies do not offer huge benefits to the brightest minds only to m ake them suffer archaic boardroom battles of seniority and due process. They work to create open and collaborative environments that encourage employees to take ownership of their ideas and projects. When people feel as though their work makes a difference to the success of the company, they are more likely to work harder, remain satisfied and put forward innovative ideas designed to propel the company forward.Innovation Sin #4: BEING TOO ANALYTICALHaving an analytical mind is a huge asset in business. Itâs a huge benefit in assessing the value of ideas and figuring out how to turn dreams into a reality. However, you can be to analytical. Just like in your personal life, overanalyzing a business deal can kill innovation before it even starts. When your analytical schemes cause innovation to grind to a halt, you are suffering from analysis paralysis. When a bare bones idea is accompanied by dozens of charts, predictions and measurements, it is hard for anyone to see past the vast amo unt of numbers and into the original idea. All of a sudden, the project is paralyzed because the team has lost sight of the goals.Too much data stifles creativity. While multi-tasking is a great way to boost productivity, you cannot be creative and analytical at the same time. These methods of thinking are very different from each other and they need to be kept separate. As a rule, companies should always avoid mixing the creative process with the analytical process.Innovation Sin #5: NOT BEING EMOTIONAL ENOUGHWhen a customer buys into your product or service, they are not buying into the functionality of the product itself. People do not buy plastic food containers with no spill features because it is a great function. Someone who invests in this product usually does it for a personal and emotional reason. For example, they might choose that functionality over a basic container because they can then begin to bring their lunch to work and finally work on losing weight and having the body they always wanted. The key to selling functionality is making it emotionally appealing. This is why advertisements work so well. People want to buy an experience and not just a thing, no matter how innovative it is. Creating an emotional narrative behind the function of your product creates brand identity and allows customers to identify with the brand.Even though you might be very proud of the innovative materials or processes that went into your product, as a whole, your customers wonât have that same amount of pride. In fact, much of your market may find it irrelevant or confusing.Thinking emotionally when you are creating a product will help drive innovation. When you think about the things in your life that a product might improve, it will be easier to find innovative ways to create, manufacture and sell the product.A great example of an emotional product is the recent trends towards sustainable, green and eco-friendly products. The main coffee drinking customer base do es not purchase Fair Trade Coffee because of the way it tastes or because it comes from a specific farm. Instead, the customers think about the farmers and growers that benefit from Fair Trade. They think about how the farmers earn a fair wage and can work in better conditions when they sell their coffee with Fair Trade organizations. This experience makes people feel as though they are doing their part to make the world a better place just by purchasing coffee with the Fair Trade label. That feel good experience is the reason that customers will pay more money for a fair, sustainable product than they will for a similar product that does not offer that same personal experience.Innovation Sin #6: OVERCOMPLICATING PRODUCTSOvercomplicating your product is another innovation sin. This is a sin for two reasons. The first is that thinking too much about the details will blur the bigger picture. The second reason that it is a sin is because it will often turn customers off from your produc t.Businesses working towards innovation need to focus on functionality but functionality does not mean making the new product that industryâs version of a Swiss Army knife. The majority of your customers wonât care if your tooth brush has Bluetooth. Customers in the larger market want a product that fits their needs but does not require a science degree to use.Sometimes innovation comes from the search to make a product work better rather than forcing it to do more work. If you focus on doing one or two things really well and becoming the leader innovation in these specialist processes, then your product will become well known for what it does. Not only is it easier to increase your productivity and innovation but you can increase your brand power this way as well.Fast-food giant McDonaldâs is a good example of a company whose product suffered when they overcomplicated it. The McDonaldâs menu expanded from 69 items to 121 items between 2004 and 2014. That equates to a 75% in crease in the menu size in a short period of time.McDonaldâs added confusing options like the McDouble alongside the standard Double Cheeseburger. The price difference between the two sandwiches was significant; yet the only difference between the products was a slice of cheese. The companyâs Chief Operating Officer admitted that it had overcomplicated its menu by adding too many new products at a pace its stores could not keep up with. Not only that, but the new menu was no longer in line with the brand. This resulted in a loss of relevance and revenue for the fast food giant.Although McDonaldâs is far from any existential trouble, if such a stable and profitable brand can suffer from an overcomplicated product, less visible products can certainly suffer as well.CONCLUSIONInnovation may come naturally to computer hardware but it is not as straightforward for people who do not run on algorithms. There are many sins that can get in the way of creativity, productivity and innovat ion. While it is comforting to know that even the most successful and established brands can fall prey to these innovation sins, it is also important to learn from their mistakes.Learning how to avoid these top innovation sins will not just save you from creating mistakes with future products. It can help you salvage your current ideas as well. Overcoming roadblocks to progress has little to do with the roadblock itself but rather how you approach it.

The Symbolism of Water in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest...
The Symbolism of Water in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, is a story about love and war. Frederic Henry, a young American, works as an ambulance driver for the Italian army in World War I. He falls tragically in love with a beautiful English nurse, Miss Catherine Barkley. This tragedy is reflected by water. Throughout the novel Ernest Hemingway uses water as metaphors. Rivers are used as symbols of rebirth and escape and rain as tragedy and disaster, which show how water plays an important role in the story. Rivers in A Farewell to Arms represent rebirth. They symbolize a departure from a previous life and an entrance to a new one. The first evidence of this comes during theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It was again as if the river has established an opportunity to lead a new life, away from the war in Italy to a more comfortable life. Henryââ¬â¢s and Catherineââ¬â¢s escape through the river not only leads them to a better life but the unborn child, too. As a symbol of tragedy rain is frequently used by Hemingway in this novel. Rain is a symbol of disaster already beginning in the first chapter when the reader learns that the war is not going well and that the the permanent rain brought the cholera. Here rain is related to illness. Rain also falls when Frederic and Catherine are looking for a hotel room so they can be together before Frederic must leave for the front. Political Manifesto Free Essays
Political Manifesto ââ¬Å"Let the people ruleâ⬠was the slogan of former United States President and first Democrat of the people of the United States, Andrew Jackson. Democracy was made for the people, but not many Americans know a lot about the political party they support and what it does to help them. First Iââ¬â¢m going to discuss some of the issues like gun control, Health care and the environment and also a brief history of the Democratic Party. We will write a custom essay sample on Political Manifesto or any similar topic only for you Order Now Next I will tell you about a few leaders that not only influenced my following of the Democratic Party, but also supported a lot of the same views and morals I follow every day. And finally I will discuss some of the social movements like, the Students for a Democratic Society, which affected Democratic students around the United States. The Democratic Party was formed from Anti-Federalist factions that were against fiscal policies in the 1790s and was then founded in the modern era in 1828 and led by Andrew Jackson. The party has the lengthiest record of continuous operation in theà United States and is among the oldest political parties in the world. (Encyclopedia Britannica Inc. , Democratic Party) The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United states along with the Republican Party and current President of the United States Barack Obama is the 15th Democrat to hold the office of the Presidency. (ââ¬Å"American Presidents: Life Portrait. C-SPAN. Ret-Jan 12, 2009) There are a lot of issues in our society that Democrats are trying to take care of as well, such as the environment. Many Democrats believe that the government should protect the environment by favoring expansion of conservation lands and exploring new means of alternative energy sources. The Democratic Party also encourages open space and rail travel to relieve highway and airport congestion and improve air quality and economy. Another issue that is taking a toll on Democrats today is health care reform. Democrats call for affordable and quality health care and many advocate an expansion of government intervention in this area. More Democrats favor national health insurance or universal health care in a variety of forms to address the rising cost of modern health insurance. The Progressive Democrats of America, a group operating inside the Democratic Party, Has made single-payer universal health care one of their primary policy goals. (ââ¬Å"Progressive Democrats of America-Priorities (Health Care for All)â⬠Pdamerica. Org, ret-2010-06-07) Now when we talk about the issue of gun control, that can be a touchy subject with certain people Democrat or not. With a stated goal of reducing crime and homicide, the Democratic Party has introduced various gun control measures. Some Democrats, especially rural, Southern, and Western Democrats, favor fewer restrictions on firearm possession and warned the party was defeated 2000 presidential election in rural areas because of the issue. (Abramsky, Sasha (2005-04-18). ââ¬Å"Democrat Killer? â⬠the Nation. Retrieved 2006-10-10) Many men in the history of the Democratic Party have influenced the way many of us live today. A few of these men, like Andrew Jackson, who was the first President of the United States that was a Democrat, helped shaped the party for future Americans. Andrew Jacksonââ¬â¢s followers went on to create modern Democratic Party. The period during which this happened, 1830-1850, became later known as the era of Jacksonian Democracy (Wilentz, Sean. ââ¬Å"Andrew Jacksonâ⬠(2005), p. 2, 35) I believe Andrew Jackson was a great Democratic figure because of his appeal to the common citizen and how he supported states and federal rights. Franklin D. Roosevelt was also a key Democrat in American history. His efforts as President of the United States were very crucial in helping the society grip together during very enduring times. He was a dominant leader of the Democratic Party and was the only American president elected more than two terms. He built a New Deal Coalition that realigned American politics after 1932, as his domestic policies defined American liberalism for the middle third of the 20th Century. In 1944 Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G. I. Bill-a historic measure that provided unprecedented benefits for soldiers returning from World War II, including low-cost mortgages, loans to start a business, and tuition and living expenses for those seeking a higher education. And our current President of the United States Barack Obama is also a Democrat who was involved in many economic issues in America at the time of his inauguration. Mainly I choose to support Barack Obama because he was my former Commander in Chief, but also because of his involvement in foreign policy with enacting the draw-down of troops from Iraq in December 2010. During its tenured history in America, the Democratic Party has seen its share of social movements, mainly of the few is Environmentalism. Environmentalism is a broad philosophy, ideology regarding concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the health of the environment. It advocates the preservation of the natural environment, and may be referred to as a movement to control pollution. (Environmentalism Definition; Merriam-webster. com. 2010-08-13. Retrieved 2012-06-20) Also having a big effect on Democratic students in America was the Students for a Democratic Society. This group was a student activist movement in the United States that developed and expanded rapidly during the mid-1960s before dissolving at its last convention in 1969. The group centered mainly on the issues of direct action and student power within the nation. In the early 2000s the 9/11 Trust movement is ongoing and many conspiracy theories have surfaced during this time as well. These social movements were such an integral part of our history and in some way had an effect on our nation, no matter how little the issue may have seemed. Picking the Democratic Party says a lot about a person and the morals they abide by. Aside from being one of the oldest political parties in the world, the Democratic Party has lots of issues that have affected the way they live their lives, like gun control across our nation, reform of a new nationwide healthcare plan and the effect we are having on our environment and what we can do to improve and/or preserve its current conditions not only across our country but around the world as well. There were many big political figures like former United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the current and 44th President of the United States Barack Obama and the first Democratic President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, that helped not only influence my choice in the Democratic Party, but also in the way America was shaped. Beyond the many figures that paved the way for Democracy to flourish in America, we had lots of social movements that also added to the way people live. Environmentalist movement, the 9/11 truth movement and the Students for a Democratic Society are just a few of the social movements that played a role in not just the Democratic Party, but the history of our great nation, the United States of America. What really makes us happy
Introduction There has been an ongoing debate regarding the real forces that determine our happiness. Indeed, psychologists have struggled in an effort to gauge happiness and identify strategies that can be used to increase individual happiness levels. However, these research efforts have not been successful in coming up with a conclusive explanation for the actual determinants of happiness.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on What really makes us happy? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The main debate revolves around the classic ââ¬Å"nature versus nurtureâ⬠debate that concerns the relative importance of a personââ¬â¢s inherent traits (nature) against personal experiences (nurture) in determining or causing personal disparities in the levels of happiness. While some psychologists support nature as the more significant factor that contributes to individual happiness, others insist that nurture is more signi ficant. Behavioral studies show that both nature and nature contribute to our happiness. Studies on this topic are still underway with researchers and theorists from both sides passionately defending their argument as the prevailing one. The Nature vs. Nurture Debate To explore the nature vs. nurture debate in relation to individual happiness, we have to define what constitutes happiness. The Open University defines happiness as ââ¬Å"a positive feeling covering a range of emotions from joy to contentmentâ⬠while unhappiness is defined as ââ¬Å"a negative feeling associated with a range of feelings from sadness to depressionâ⬠(The Open University, 5). Furthermore, whenever we are happy, we want to the feeling to persist but when we are unhappy, we want the feeling to end. Happiness and unhappiness feelings cannot be said to be mutually exclusive since we sometimes have both emotions at the same time. The quest for happiness is a universal phenomenon. A significant propo rtion of persons when asked what they wanted most in life, mentioned happiness as one of the things they wanted. While every person would like to have happiness in their lives, researchers are divided on how to achieve this happiness (The Open University, 125). There are those who say that happiness is caused by life events experiences (nurture) such as happy relationships, social influences, social status, employment (Layard, 3), achievement of goals and so on, however, others assert insist on the genetic makeup of individuals. The latter has been criticized for its heavy dependence on social construct. For instance, it can erroneously lead to the conclusion that a certain genetic makeup is superior to others in determining oneââ¬â¢s capacity for happiness.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Therefore, we can conclude that nurture plays a more significant role in determining a personââ¬â¢s happiness. Life events include happy relationships with spouses, peers, and other persons, the national, geographical, cultural region in which one resides as well as demographic elements, personal history and life status variables such as social influences, social status, employment, and the achievement of goals. Life events are a great determinant of happiness among children and adults. For instance, a study by the Childrenââ¬â¢s Society concluded that the most important element in determining young personââ¬â¢s happiness was family, friends, and a feeling of being loved and supported (The Open University, 85). Several studies have also shown that adultsââ¬â¢ relationships with friends, family, income, economic growth and partners greatly affect their happiness. Social psychologists have shown that family relationships are the single most important factor that determines happiness in both children and adults (The Open University, 125). While proponents of nature (genetics) as a source of happiness assert that life events have only a temporary impact on oneââ¬â¢s happiness, occurrences such as widowhood, divorce, and continued unemployment have a long-term effect on oneââ¬â¢s happiness. Although the contribution of genetics to happiness cannot be ignored, life experiences play a more significant role in the quest for happiness. Findings from studies show that identical twins exhibit more similarity in happiness levels than twins who are not identical. Since genes are inherent with a person having no control over the type of genes inherited from parents, perhaps it is the realization that one can take steps in determining their level of happiness and well-being that makes life experiences a more significa nt contributor to happiness (The Open University, 125). Despite the widely held belief that happiness is mainly influenced by life events and genetics, social psychologists tend to deviate from this classic definition, instead saying that our happiness is hinged on the way we feel (The Open University, 57). They point out to reports that found out that optimists were more healthier, were less worried about illnesses, made better progress from health complications and lived longer than pessimists.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on What really makes us happy? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The studies suggest that life events only serve to teach us to expect a lot or less in life. A bitter experience can make us to be routine pessimist thinkers and this habit can block memories of good things that have happened to us before and even lead us to make the worst of future opportunities for happiness. In general, we ca n have happiness in life by focusing on positive aspects of our own lives, having optimistic realistic expectations, and believing that that our happiness lies on our hands. Conclusion Happiness is a very important aspect of our day-to-day lives, however, determining the source of happiness. In this paper, I conducted a literature review on the various determinants of happiness from research paper and opinions from experts. While there is no single factor that causes happiness or unhappiness in our lives, life events and experiences are seen to play a more significant role as compared to genetics. However, we must stay positive in our thinking and learn how to enhance our happiness from the experiences.
