Oedipus The King By Sophocles - 1432 Words

The play â€Å"Oedipus the king† by Sophocles began with Oedipus as a King, and ended with his downfall. Oedipus’s fall from his noble status was not by accident or caused by another person, rather Oedipus himself is to be blamed for his adversity. The play uses many symbols, places, motifs, themes, ideas, and imagery to give the audience a sense of reality and foreshadow the fate of Oedipus. Symbols relating to the three way crossroad and Oedipus’s swollen foot were referred to a number of times. Motifs of sight and blindness were recurrent throughout the play. The use of dark and light imagery is present in many parts of the play. These symbols along with clear motifs and the addition of light and dark imagery are used to foreshadow†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"well, there was a murder, yes, but done by the brigands in another land, they say, where three highways meet† (40) Jocasta said this to calm Oedipus but the statement above just makes Oedip us remember his forgotten past but to Oedipus it stays very unclear and does not make sense, whereas the audience can recognize it as a foreshadowing of his ultimate downfall. As a grown man, Oedipus still limps from what he thinks is a childhood injury inflicted on his ankles, this reference provides the clues for audience to realize that his swollen ankles symbolize his downfall. Oedipus is the Latin form of the Greek word Oidipous which means swollen foot, so even his name is a symbol relating to his swollen ankles which symbolize his fate. His swollen ankles does not bother Oedipus until Jocasta says â€Å"the son, not three days old, is left by Laius (through other hands of course) upon a trackless hillside, his ankles riveted together.†(40). This does not really ease Oedipus’s mind as all of it seems so similar to his past. But even after listening this story Oedipus does not realize that he is the son of Laius and the child Jocasta is talking about is him, instead he works harder to uncover the truth hoping there is another explanation. At this point to the audience it is very clear that Oedipus’s injury is being used to foresha dow his downfall. References towards eyesight and vision are used in both literal and metaphorical sense, these are also quite recurrent in the

Veterans people to remember Essay Example For Students

Veterans people to remember Essay Veterans people to remember Essay This Veterans Day pays tribute to those who did their duty as patriots. It is our moral duty to make them feel appreciated on Veterans Day. A small thing to ask in exchange for extraordinary valor and bravery. Many years our Nation has honored Veterans and set aside a special day to pay tribute and say thank you to those who serve in our Armed Forces. On this Veterans Day, Americans across the country will honor and remember their family members, friends, and neighbors who served in our Nations military. No act of citizenship is more worthy of respect than service in our Armed Forces in order to protect and defend our ideals and because the tradition of the citizen soldier is deeply imbedded in our Nations history. Most Americans are privileged to have friends, family members, and colleagues whom they can personally thank, on this significant day, for their military service. Since the birth of our Nation, American soldiers, sailors, Marines and pilots have showed heroism, courage, and daring during wartime. Veterans Day is a reminder to the rest of us of the sacrifices they have made on our behalf. Veterans Day is also an opportunity to recognize the challenges faced, and sacrifices made, by those who serve during what passes for peacetime in todays, and tomorrows, ever-changing the unstable world. The men and women who serve in our American Army are among our best and our brightest. The many soldiers who have risked their life toward the benefit of our country have earned our respect and our thanks. Ceremonies, speeches, displaying the flag, visiting veterans cemetery, spending time with a veteran in a hospital these are all wonderful ways to honor our veterans. Veterans and men and women in the army now have protected our country and given us many rights as citizens, freedom of speech, voting, and many more that we can use at our willing. Without our veterans, we would not enjoy the rights that we so often take for granted. Finally, I hope all of us will honor Men and Women in Vietnam, Revolution, the world wars, and others not mentioned. Everyone should set away some time, for a few moments on Veterans Day, and every day, to remember those millions of service members, not with sorrow or regret, but with pride in the job they did, and with humble thanks that America extraordinarily good and decent people. Veterans asked very little of their country but gave everything they had. The least we can do is give them our sincerest thank you for a job well done. There are perhaps thousands of veterans in the community family, friends, and others. Who deserve a thank you on this special day. If you appreciate the freedom, we, as Americans, enjoy today, and then you realize why its important to honor those who sacrificed for that freedom. .

The Early Film Industry Essay Example For Students

The Early Film Industry Essay The film industry was formed in the 1890s in New York and Chicago. The industry invented the first motion-picture shows. Throughout the years, more people from those cities began to pay attention to films and began enjoying watching it. Films were becoming the most popular entertainment. Every city had one or more theaters and tons of people attend those theaters. It beame a great way to socialize and see how successful the film industry had become. Even though the industry became popular, it provided detrimental influence on children, so censorship was created to protect those films by either editing the inappropriate scenes in the film or rejected films to premiere. According to the children in the cities of Chicago and New York, they believed that the shows played in theaters were real and they should mimic it. In the article, â€Å" The House of Dreams†, the author, Jane Addams, mentioned that youth believed that â€Å"views the deeds of the hero simply as a forecast of his own future and it is this fascinating view of his own career which draws the boy to shows of all sorts. We will write a custom essay on The Early Film Industry specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now They can scarcely be too improbably for him, portraying, as they do, his belief in his own prowess† (pg. 78). Type of movies about revenge, romance, drama, and action heroes, interest the youth, so Addams believed that the youth could not tell if the shows are real or not. As a result, â€Å" An eminent alienist of Chicago states that he has had a number of patients among neurotic children whose emotional natures have been so over-wrought by the crude appeal to which they had been so constantly subjected in the theaters, they have become ictims of hallucination and mental disorder† (92). Only were children suffering from mental issues from those movies but, those movies also showed what the children should do and that would be there future. In the end, films caused crimes and chaos in the cities. One example that a child committed a crime was stealing â€Å" a mass of artificial flowers with which to trim a hat. She stated that she had taken the flowers because she was afraid of losing the attention of a young man. (pg. 0)† That man was the only man that ever took her to movies and if he doesn’t see him, she will be heartbroken and couldn’t go to the theater ever again. She cannot live without the theater. This example shows how films affected children’s mind causing them do illegal actions instead of having common sense. That girl could have gone to the theater with a different guy instead of being so obsessive with that one guy, but movies taught her that she needs to keep that one guy by being all â€Å"dressy† and giving him attention. Another example story that Addams wrote that had to do with children committing crimes was about how a family of a women, two boys, and a baby are in poverty where the mother sends her boys out to beg for money. They didn’t listen to their mother, took a revolver, killed a Chinese laundry-man, stole money from him, and gave the money to the mother where she was thankful (79). Addams also mentioned a story were nine, eleven, and thirteen years old boys planned to kill and rob a milkman. They bought a gun tried to shoot him, but they missed. Not only young boys were causing illegal actions. Older boys were also doing it too. For example, â€Å" Thirteen young lads were brought into Municipal Courteach one with an outfit of burglar’s tools in his possession† (94) Those boys told the judges that they saw a play that had a burglar that suggested that other people should follow his path. Those types of shows were unacceptable, according the writers, similar to Addams, because it filled the youth’s minds to accept those actions and made them okay to do it. The communities in both New York and Chicago were afraid that there will be more crimes so the communities created censorship. Censorship started to happen in the late 1890’s due to the films being a threat to morality. For an example, the film, The Kiss, by Thomas Edison is viewed as an evil film because it was showing sexual scenes that children end up seeing in theaters. About a decade later, Chicago enacts the first movie censorship law in America (A Brief History of Film Censorship). Later on, other cities and states knew about censorship and formed their own censorship organization. .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .postImageUrl , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:hover , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:visited , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:active { border:0!important; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:active , .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871 .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uff920d374ba9935d06d6c7d8c107c871:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Movie Summary - A Civil Action EssayNew York was the second city that trying to censor movies. In the article, The Campaign to Curb the Moving Picture Evil in New York: Organized, it mentions the Mayor Gavor was trying to regulate shows so it can become â€Å"a clean, safe, healthful, and moral place for children of New York City. † By taking those actions, â€Å" the Motion Picture Conference organized for the purpose of improving the physical conditions at moving-picture theaters† They had a bill that integrates films but the Committee of Rules did not except it. Even though the bill was rejected, Commissioner Fosdick did some investigation on theaters and children and found out that theaters were evil and it affected children’s mind. Thomas D. Walsh reported that children do not have supervision while watching movies making them sit with â€Å"evil-minded and depraved men†. He also reported that there were twenty-eight cases of crimes committed from those actions and tons of other cases cause my immoral actions from children. Walsh wasn’t the only one that reported how evil films are, Miss Maude E. Miner, Secretary of the New York Probation Association did too. She stated that there was a child who admitted that he or she would ask a man to get him or her a ticket because he or she was not old enough to go to the movies by him or herself. The child told that the man would do that to others, and then bring them to the balcony where they began their vicious work. Miss Miner later had her opinion about children seeing motion pictures. She believed that theaters should not show any immoral films and that they should humane organizations, such as Russell Sage Foundation, showing educational and entertainment pictures that not only instruct lessons to children, but also to poorer classes. Later on, Tom Gunning explained in his article, From the Opium Den to the Theatre of Morality, that the Board of Censorship was created on March 1909 due to the mayor of New York City â€Å" revoking all licenses for nickelodeons in the metropolitan are and ordering them closed† and how the movies had negative affects in the society (146-147). The Board of Censorship affected the showing of movies. In the article, The Campaign to Curb the Moving Picture Evil in New York: Organized, it mentioned that the board would show â€Å"special release pictures† â€Å"special† theater that no children are allowed to go to. Those first films they censored were the prizefight at Reno and the famous picture of Roosevelt in Africa. The board also reviewed the films that production companies had submitted and either passed the movies, if the production companies made certain changes, or rejected the films completely. Gunning used the movie, La Parapluie d’ Anatole, as an example that showed that the board passed the film if it were edited, such as changing the name of the movie, cutting out the letter that the son wrote to his mother, making it two versions, and cutting out part of a scene in the prison (148). Instead of submitting shows to the board for approval, theater managers, such as Charles Frohman, requested permission from the board so show shows that would give moral lessons. In the article, Frohman Favors Good Sunday Shows, Frohman wanted to show shows on Sunday because he believed that â€Å" the Church is not successfully coping with moral and ethical problems. † He feels like the plays would reach out to those who need the most influence. His idea was to have the plays be â€Å"chosen by a committee of citizens who have long been identified with humanitarian projects in each community and that the strictest civic supervision be exercised. Another reason why he considered to have plays on Sundays was because â€Å" Sunday (is) a day of rest for the public and actors† He imaged that more people would come observe the plays and get the moral lessons behind the plays since jobs are closed and the public are free that day. Frohman mentioned dramatist writers, such a s John Galsworthy, Granville Barker, and Bernard Shaw, who created plays that teach righteousness, brotherhood, and humanity. .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .postImageUrl , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:hover , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:visited , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:active { border:0!important; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:active , .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36 .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc98c0b7ceda445c33a0c0ba2a3518c36:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Discussing the film Closer EssayHe mentioned the play, â€Å"Justice,† as an example where teaches â€Å" the effect of bringing about prison reforms in England. That and other plays, such as â€Å" Smith,† â€Å"The Scandal,† and â€Å"The Jews,† are productions that is suitable fro him to play in his Sunday show since they provide moral lessons. Since censorship had surfaced throughout the cities and states, it affected the film industry and the societies. The National Board of Censorship made sure the â€Å"evil† films were destroyed and the other films would provide positive influence to the communities. Articles had reports on how m any films were either destroyed or edited. The article, Censors Destroyed Evil Picture Films,† is an example that reported the influence of the board on films. It reported that examined 99 per cent of the movies on the market, which are almost all the films. It means that those films where either left alone, edited, or thrown away because it was too inappropriate to be release to the public, especially children. It reported that since the board has existence, 2,000,000 feet of objectionable films, which had a value of $200,00, were destroyed. Even though film industry lost money on those films, the board had positive influence on the cities, such as St. Louis, Atlanta, Portland, Detroit, and Washington. The children in those cities would get a moral lesson from those movies, such as don’t commit crimes. Another method to improvement the communities that the article mentioned was to let the â€Å"adult receives and can healthfully digest simply goes over the heads of children, and if children are defended from th e calculated immoral lesson and from excessive scenes of horror and violence, has been accomplished. † The children ended up not going to motion picture shows because the parents and the laws excluded them. This is a positive influence since children won’t be allowed to watch inappropriate movies that can ruin their minds and create chaos to the cities and their future career. Therefore motion picture shows should be evaluated before the children viewed it because if movies aren’t investigated, then the youth, in cities like New York and Chicago, would learn the immoral actions and cause destruction to the cities and most importantly, to themselves. Without the invention of censorship, United States would be unstable. Children would keep asking adults to come to the movies with them. In return, the adults would grab children and abuse them. Children would also keep stealing money from ladies and give it to their mothers or plan an assassination on the neighborhood milkman. Children would not have the knowledge to realize what is romantic, sexual pleasure and think that sex is something to do when you are bored or just to get kids and that’s all. None of the kids would know the cigarettes are deadly to their health and they can end up killed. Censorship is similar to rules/laws where if both didn’t existence, then the whole world would be upside down. Bibliography: 1. Influence of Moral Reasoning Essays - Graham Spanier, Jerry Sandusky

Influence of Moral Reasoning Essays - Graham Spanier, Jerry Sandusky Influence of Moral Reasoning CRT/205 April 13, 2014 Captain E.F. Rollins Influence of Moral Reasoning What were the actions taken by the person you chose? Penn State President, Graham Spanier, failed to report alleged incidents in which Penn State football assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, had inappropriate contact with minors that ranged from groping to anal sex (Amiel, 2011). Spanier chose to ignore these allegations because he did not investigate to see if there was any foundation to these claims. What was the impact of those actions? The impact of Spaniers actions was that these allegations were ignored and left to grow in numbers unchecked. This failure to investigate or report and ignoring the allegations led to Spanier appearing to be guilty of covering up for Sandusky. He appeared to be guilty by association because he did nothing. Another impact of Spaniers actions was that Penn State was portrayed negatively in the press and, therefore, viewed as an unsafe place for children or young adults. If you had held the same position, what action would you have taken? If I had held the position of Penn State President, I would have placed Sandusky on leave of absence and conducted an investigation of these allegations to see if there was any truth in these allegations or if these allegations were just from students that were trying to get back at Sandusky. At the end of my investigation, I would report my findings and the allegations to the police. I would not have covered this up because covering something up makes you appear to be guilty. How did your moral reasoning impact your decision? My moral reasoning impacted my decision in the fact that my moral values are against harming a child in any way whether physically or verbally. I believe that it is wrong to harm defenseless children especially by authority figures since children are taught to respect authority. People in positions of authority that take unfair advantage of children are misusing their authority for their own selfish desires. These predators realize that children are taught to respect authority and are less likely to resist or report the abuse because the children will be scared and feel like it was their fault. Conjugation of Past or Preterite Tense Verbs in Spanish

Conjugation of Past or Preterite Tense Verbs in Spanish As one of Spanishs two simple past tenses, the preterite  has a conjugation that is essential to learn. It is the verb form used most often to tell of events that have already happened and that are seen as completed. The other simple past tense, the imperfect, is used for past actions that are not completed, meaning the past action did not have a definite beginning or a definite end. How to Conjugate the Preterite Tense In Spanish, verbs are the words that change the most often and depend on different tenses, moods, gender, and agreement in person according to what needs to be conveyed in the sentence. A verb ending can indicate when the action occurs, and also give the listener a better idea of who or what is performing the action. As is the case with standard Spanish conjugation rules, the preterite verb forms are made by removing the infinitive ending of the verb, such as -ar, -er or -ir, and replacing it with an ending that indicates who is performing the action of the verb. Verbs agree in person and number. For example, the infinitive or base form of the verb that means to speak is hablar. Its infinitive ending is -ar, and the verb stem is habl-. To say I spoke, remove the -ar, add -à © to the stem, forming hablà ©. Yo hablà © is I spoke. To say you spoke, singular you in an informal way, remove the -ar, add -aste to the stem, forming hablaste:  Tu hablaste is You spoke. Other forms exist for other personal pronouns. The endings are slightly different for verbs that end in -er and -ir, but the principle is the same. Remove the infinitive ending, then add the appropriate ending to the remaining stem. Conjugation of Regular -AR Verbs in the Preterite Tense Person -Ar Ending Infinitive: Hablar Translation: To Speak yo - habl I spoke t -aste hablaste you (informal) spoke l, ella, usted - habl he/she spoke, you (formal) spoke nosotros, nosotras -amos hablamos we spoke vosotros, vosotras -asteis hablasteis you spoke (informal) ellos, ellas, ustedes -aron hablaron they spoke, you (formal) spoke Conjugation of Regular -ER Verbs in the Preterite Tense Person -Er Ending Infinitive: Aprender Translation: To Learn yo - aprend I learned t -iste aprendiste you (informal) learned l, ella, usted -i aprendi he/she learned, you (formal) learned nosotros, nosotras -imos aprendimos we learned vosotros, vosotras -isteis aprendisteis you learned (informal) ellos, ellas, ustedes -ieron aprendieron they learned, you (formal) learned Conjugation of Regular -IR Verbs in the Preterite Tense Person -Ir Ending Infinitive: Escribir Translation: To Write yo - escrib I wrote t -iste escribiste you (informal) wrote l, ella, usted -i escribi he/she wrote, you (formal) wrote nosotros, nosotras -imos escribimos we wrote vosotros, vosotras -isteis escribisteis you wrote (informal) ellos, ellas, ustedes -ieron escribieron they wrote, you (formal) wrote In the preterite tense, regular -er and -ir verbs use the same pattern of endings. Additionally, the first-person plural, the we form of nosotros and nosotras, has the same conjugation for both the present indicative tense and the preterite past tense for -ar and -ir verbs. The word hablamos can mean either we speak or we spoke, and escribimos can mean either we write or we wrote. In most cases, the context of the sentence makes clear which tense is intended. Conjugations of Common Irregular Verbs Below are the preterite-tense for the irregular verbs you are most likely to use. Digital Reconsruction of America Tropical Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Digital Reconsruction of America Tropical - Essay Example The America Tropical was created during the height of Siqueiros’ haunt for justice and freedom for all oppressed. He expressed it through that mural about all race whether Indians, Creoles, African-American, Mexican-Americans who were tyrannized by their governments. The mural scandalized officials of Olvera Street because it signifies imperialism and a very powerful statement. Olvera Street is an epitome of a Mexican marketplace, which is old-fashioned, folkloric, precious, busy, crowded, and persistently evading anything about political, outrageous and political. In other words, it is a very conservative and historic place for tourists and people who want a peaceful life in their surroundings. Siqueiros broke the silence when he painted it on the street combined with the political theme, but due to wide resistance from the officials, the mural eventually covered by white paint. But then again, the white paint in fact protected the mural from the effects of heavy rain and ext reme exposure to sunlight. Due to widespread acceptance and requests from Chicano artists, they campaigned for the preservation of the America Tropical and a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the restoration of the mural through a platform at the Olvera Street. Christine Sterling was never appreciative of this kind of artwork, she advocated for the rebuilding of the street into a tourist attraction with a theme of a Mexican marketplace. She wanted to expose the city’s Mexican heritage and even hired laborers from the recruited from the local jail to pursue her plans. She really wanted to preserve the city’s rich Mexican influence, but in essence, she never consulted the community of Mexican-Americans to discuss on how they can elaborate the significance and content of the restoration. It is subjective and the approach is more of authoritarian rather than participatory. She deprived the real voice and symbol of Olvera Street, which is the Mexican heritage and struggl e of the people in pursuit for freedom and justice. The objectives of Sterling is kind of related to the Mission Myth because of the romanticism it gets from the restoration and reconstruction project that only depicts tourism, charm and beauty behind the culture and Mexican heritage (Cadge-Moore). It does not encompass the reality of the heritage that is struggle and freedom for social justice and oppression. In addition, elements behind Sequeiros’ mural does not complement with the views of Sterling. The mural portrayed a central figure of an indigenous peasant tied around the double- crossed wood and above the Indian peasant is an eagle representing imperialism as the artist wanted to convey the many sufferings of the people under the government tyranny. A controversial masterpiece of Siqueiros combined public street art with political and revolutionary leanings. While Sterling wanted to create a venue of romanticism and contentment. Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo is known for he r strong and progressive character who embraced her Mexican heritage throughout her lifetime. Although less influential during her time, her works became popular in the 20th century due to Chicano Movement. She joined the revolution along with her husband, Diego Rivera. Her paintings became a symbol of her character defining her experience and sufferings. One painting is her self-portrait entitled, â€Å"

Fire Safety Essay Example for Free

Fire Safety Essay The entire casualty of a fire to a society may be equal to all the fire hazards in the society; this would comprise of the buildings, agriculture, transportation, and so on. A lot of factors contribute to the total cost. With regards to the damage caused by the fires we have, definitely, the direct casualty of life, harm and the real economic losses due to the occurrence of fire. There are indirect or important outcomes because of the disorder of amenities, loss of trade, and means of employment. There is also community distress and unease, specifically the subsequent chief catastrophes and the cost of any hassle caused. The outlay of fire safety procedures includes costs meant for fire prevention, fire control when they occur, and extenuating their direct and indirect aftermath. This comprises the cost of services such as the fire contingent, fire indemnity, and an extensive part of building power or other variable measures (Rasbash, 2004). The Nature of the Fire Hazard The hazard of fire is the result of unrestrained, exothermic responses, particularly involving natural resources and air. It is predominantly connected with flammable materials and energy resources utilized by people in daily life. Although fire intimidates both the living and their property, and its management costs much disbursement, the danger must be situated against the advantage achieved from these properties so that an unbiased view can be attained. Furthermore, existing principles are greatly reliant on the utilization of buildings. The additional risk when fires happen in an enclosed space, by means of the increased temperature and smoke being trapped rather than moving comparatively safely upward, requires being located against the essential worth of using buildings. It then follows that one cannot, in general abolish the danger of fire, although one can lessen it to an adequately low intensity by appropriate design measures (Kiurski, 1999). Major Fire Hazard Areas Loss and damage caused by fire can occur anytime activity happens. Maybe the most common setting for such activity is inside buildings. Such incorporate both domestic and nondomestic grounds, and the latter can expand to a broad array of tenure, such as various factories, establishment structures where there are particular dangers to the community, these includes areas of open assemblies and spaces where people sleep, like hotels and hospitals. Business occupancies broaden further than building structures to take in mines, process plants within open, offshore mechanisms, agricultural harvests, and forestry. Lastly there is an entire variety of amenities for highway, rail, marine, and air transportation even lengthening in current period to satellites and space sections. For most of these danger zones, a substantial and expensive fire incidence conditions has built up over the time being and has known to widespread necessities for fire safety. In the world of fire insurance, particular danger locations are regularly called â€Å"risks† (Rasbash, 2004). The Chemistry of Fire Fire is basically a chemical reaction that involves the rapid oxidation of combustible material or fuel, with the subsequent liberation of heat and light. In a typical community, all the elements essential for fire to begin are present – fuel, heat or ignition source, and oxygen (air). However, recent research suggests that fourth factor is present. This factor has been classified as a reaction chain in which burning continues and even action of the molecules from the material burning with the oxygen in the atmosphere. Fires have been divided into four classes based in the nature of combustible material and requirements for extinguishment: Class A: usual flammable solid equipment, such as paper, wood, plastic, and fabric. Class B: flammable liquids/gases and combustible petroleum products. Class C: electrical apparatus that are keyed up or energized. Class D: combustible/reactive metals, such as magnesium, sodium, and potassium (Bishop, Fody, Schoeff, 2004). Fire Extinguishment and Inhibition The most basic and most efficient approach on hand to the architect to guarantee fire safety is to avoid fires from starting, that is fire prevention. If this tactic is successful, then there is no need even to attempt any other fire safety measure. Prevention of ignition and the limitation of the fuel available are the twin methods of fire prevention. In scheming to lessen the explosion danger, there are two things the architect has to do: firstly plan out the assumed explosion danger or causes; and secondly, to facilitate the infrastructure to be controlled in such an approach that the danger of explosion is get rid of. The actual design against the risk and the design to permit management against the risk must be seen together. The first necessity for the designer is an understanding of the most likely ignition risks in the particular building type under construction: it is essential to know your enemy if it is going to be defeated. Probably the most common cause of ignition, and certainly the hardest to design against, is human carelessness. Almost all fires started by smoking materials or matches could be avoided, and yet these are one of the major causes of domestic fires and consequent loss of life. Similarly, the continuing high incidence of fires concerned with cookers and stoves are normally due to human carelessness (Stollard Abrahams, 1999). Types and Applications of Fire Extinguishers Just as fires have been divided into classes, fire extinguishers are divided into classes that correspond to the type of fire to be extinguished. Be certain to choose the right type – using the wrong type of extinguisher may be dangerous. For example, do not use water on burning liquids or electrical equipment. Pressurized-water extinguishers, as well as suds and multi-use dry-chemical types, are used for Class A fires. For Class B and C fires, on the other hand, multi-use dry-chemical and carbon dioxide extinguishers are used. Halogenated hydrocarbon extinguishers are particularly recommended for use with computer equipment. Class D fires present special problems, and extinguishment is left to trained firefighters using special dry-chemical extinguishers. Personnel should know the location and type of portable fire extinguisher near their work area and know how to use an extinguisher before a fire occurs. In the event of fire, first evacuate all personnel, patients, and visitors who are in immediate danger and then activate the fire alarm, report the fire, and attempt to extinguish the fire, if possible. Personnel should work as a team to carry out emergency procedure. Fire drills must be conducted regularly and with appropriate documentation (Bishop et al. , 2004). Fire Safety Codes Fire safety codes and regulations exist to provide a reasonable measure of safety in a building from fire, explosions, or other comparable emergencies. The model code used by most jurisdictions is the Life Safety Code written by the National Fire Protection Association, Covering many of the same concerns with design, construction, and materials as in the building codes, the Life Safety Code attempts to lessen the danger to life from fire, smoke, and hazardous fumes and gases. The intent of these codes is to prevent a fire whenever possible. However, since all fires cannot be prevented, the codes also focus on fore control. Fire prevention is facilitated by the regulation of hazards and such things as controls on the kinds of material – both construction and furnishings – that can be used in buildings. Fire safety control is facilitated by the requirement of fire sprinklers, fire doors, and the like. Fire codes focus on such matters as egress interior architectural finishes, and fire protection equipment such as sprinklers and smoke detectors. Fire regulations related to furniture construction and fabrics or finishes are more a matter of federal, state and local regulations (Piotrowski, 2001). Contribution of Fire Safety Engineering Fire safety engineering can be defined as the application of scientific and engineering principles to the effects of fire in order to reduce the loss of life and damage to property by quantifying the risks and hazards involved and to provide an optimal solution to the application of preventive or protective measures. The concept of fire safety engineering may be applied to any situation where fire is a potential hazard. Although this text is mainly concerned with building structures, similar principles are equally applicable to the problems associated with oil or gas installations or other structures such as highway bridges. The additional hazards from gas and oil installations are primarily caused by the far more rapid growth of fire and the associated faster rates of temperature rise. This has been recognized by considering the testing of material response under heating regimes other than those associated with the more conventional cellulosic fires. The design methods are, however, similar to those for the situation covered by the more normal cellulosic based fires (Purkiss, 1996). Conclusion: Sticking to Basics Most instructive programs of any kind boil down to making an audience aware of a few key points. A rule of thumb in virtually any kind of education is that the more elementary a skill or given bit of knowledge is the more valuable it is. A general, fundamental rule can be more generally applied in everyday life than one that is tied to more advanced principles. For the fire service, this means educating an audience on basic means of prevention and coping with emergencies – subjects that professional firefighters might almost take for granted or consider obvious, but about which the average citizen may never have given much thought (Kiurski, 1999). Electrolysis :: Papers

In chemistry, the production of chemical changes by passing an electric current through a solution or molten salt (the electrolyte), resulting in the migration of ions to the electrodes: positive ions (cations) to the negative electrode (cathode) and negative ions (anions) to the positive electrode (anode). During electrolysis, the ions react with the electrode, either receiving or giving up electrons. The resultant atoms may be liberated as a gas, or deposited as a solid on the electrode, in amounts that are proportional to the amount of current passed, as discovered by English chemist Michael Faraday. For instance, when acidified water is electrolysed, hydrogen ions (H+) at the cathode receive electrons to form hydrogen gas; hydroxide ions (OH-) at the anode give up electrons to form oxygen gas and water. One application of electrolysis is electroplating, in which a solution of a salt, such as silver nitrate (AgNO3), is used and the object to be plated acts as the negative electrode, thus attracting silver ions (Ag+). Electrolysis is used in many industrial processes, such as coating metals for vehicles and ships, and refining bauxite into aluminium; it also forms the basis of a number of electrochemical analytical techniques, such as polarography. Faraday's laws ============== Three laws of electromagnetic induction, and two laws of electrolysis, all proposed originally by English scientist Michael Faraday: Induction (1) a changing magnetic field induces an electromagnetic force In a conductor; (2) the electromagnetic force is proportional to the rate of change of the field; (3) the direction of the induced electromagnetic force depends on the orientation of the field. Electrolysis (1) the amount of chemical change during electrolysis is proportional to the charge passing through the liquid; (2) the amount of chemical change produced in a substance by a given amount of electricity is proportional to the electrochemical equivalent of that substance. Faraday's constant ================== Constant (symbol F) representing the electric charge carried on one mole of electrons.

Acct Mid-Term Solutions Essay

Examination I I will select five of the following questions for the mid-term exam. You should be able to answer all of them. You may work together in study groups and analyze and answer the questions. Obviously, the exam will be an individual effort. 1Accounting and Control The controller of a small private college is complaining about the amount of work she is required to do at the beginning of each month. The president of the university requires the controller to submit a monthly report by the fifth day of the following month. The monthly report contains pages of financial data from operations. The controller was heard saying, â€Å"Why does the president need all this information? He probably doesn’t read half of the report. He’s an old English professor and probably doesn’t know the difference between a cost and a revenue.† Required: a. What is the probable role of the monthly report? Ans: The monthly report is the report card for the University’s internal accounting system, these monthly reports are a formal part of the University’s information system, that provides data and knowledge for decision making (pg.2 of text). These reports are part of a system of controls, these controls force the organization to account for their monthly transactions and the president needs to know this so that he can defend and reconcile the position of his company. These reports are useful to the president so that he can manage the in-and-outflow of resources that keep the University’s board members and employees interests aligned. For the president, the role of these monthly reports are to provide information for necessary planning and decision making and to also help motivate and monitor people within the university (pg. 3 of text). b. What is the controller’s responsibility with respect to a president who doesn’t know much accounting? Ans: It is the controller’s responsibility to ensure the President understands what the reports say/symbolize and based upon those results, make suggestions on decisions. Their responsibilities involve assuring the reports are accurate, meet accounting standards by following accounting principles and procedures, and having a strong fiducial understanding of the business so that the numbers in his report tell a story about the University’s position in the market and the current state of its operational drivers (pg.10&11 of text). 2Cost, Volume, Profit Analysis Leslie Mittelberg is considering the wholesaling of a leather handbag from Kenya. She must travel to Kenya to check on quality and transportation. The trip will cost $3000. The cost of the handbag is $10 and shipping to the United States can occur through the postal system for $2 per handbag or through a freight company which will ship a container that can hold up to a 1000 handbags at a cost of $1000. The freight company will charge $1000 even if less than 1000 handbags are shipped. Leslie will try to sell the handbags to retailers for $20. Assume there are no other costs and benefits. Required: a. What is the break-even point if shipping is through the postal system? Ans: Break Even Point = Total Fixed Costs / (Unit Price – Unit Variable Costs) BEP = $3000 / ($20 – $12)= 375 handbags b. How many units must be sold if Leslie uses the freight company and she wants to have a profit of $1000? Ans: Total Revenue – Total Costs= Profit TR-TC=1000: $20x-($3000+$1000+$10x) =$1000 $10x=$5000; x=500 handbags. c. At what output level would the two shipping methods yield the same profit? Ans: Ï€=TR-TC; Freight: Ï€=$10x-$4000; Postal: Ï€=$8x-$3000 ( Two equations same unknown, set equal: 10x-4000=8x-3000( 2x=1000 ( x=500 handbags d. Suppose a large discount store asks to buy an additional 1000 handbags beyond normal sales. Which shipping method should be used and what is the minimum sales price Leslie should consider in selling those 1000 handbags? Ans: At a 1000 handbags, freight shipping should be used because the UVC to ship a bag would be $1 as opposed to $2 through postal. The minimum price of the bag should cover Leslies VC just to break even, VC=10(1000)+1000=$11,000/1000bags = $11.00. 3Asset Replacement The Baltic Company is considering the purchase of a new machine tool to replace an obsolete one. The machine being used for the operation has a tax-basis book value of $80,000, with an annual depreciation expense of $8,000. It has a resale value today of $40,000, is in good working order, and will last, physically, for at least 10 more years. The proposed machine will perform the operation so much more efficiently and Baltic engineers estimate that labor, material, and other direct costs of the operation will be reduced $60,000 a year if it is installed. The proposed machine costs $240,000 delivered and installed, and its economic life is estimated at 10 years, with zero salvage value. The company expects to earn 14 percent on its investment after taxes (14 percent is the firm’s cost of capital). The tax rate is 40 percent, and the firm uses straight-line depreciation. Any gain or loss on the sale of the machine at retirement is subject to tax at 40 percent. Should Baltic buy the new machine? 4Transfer Prices The Alpha Division of the Carlson Company manufactures product X at a variable cost of $40 per unit. Alpha Division’s fixed costs, which are sunk, are $20 per unit. The market price of X is $70 per unit. Beta Division of Carlson Company uses product X to make Y. The variable costs to convert X to Y are $20 per unit and the fixed costs, which are sunk, are $10 per unit. The product Y sells for $80 per unit. Required: a. What transfer price of X causes divisional managers to make decentralized decisions that maximize Carlson Company’s profit if each division is treated as a profit center? Ans: The minimum price Alpha can accept is $40+$20** = $40. The maximum Beta can pay is $80-$20-$10** or $60. **To have â€Å"sunken fixed costs† a firm would have to be operating in the short-run, the sunken fixed costs are unrecoverable and are already paid, these costs shouldn’t be considered when determining whether or not to shut down. The transfer price must be set in such a way as to induce the two parties to make the transfer. In essence, the transfer price must give incentives to the Alpha Division to want to make the transfer and give incentives to the Beta Division to buy (b/c they’re both profit centers, decentralized decision makers). In other words, the following two constraints must be satisfied: Alpha:TP > $40 (variable cost) Beta DivisionTP < $60 (selling price ($80) – variable costs to complete ($20)) where: TP = transfer price ( $40

Culture Shock Essay

Having been raised in a traditional Mexican family, I thought that growing up I had a good understanding about the Mexican culture and families. However, I was seriously mistaken upon returning to Mexico for a family vacation. I was expecting to go across the border and experience things similar to what we have in the States, but that was not the case. The experience is completely different and charmingly appealing. The infrastructure is nothing compered to what we have here, the family values are very different and how people would spend their time. When I first arrived in Mexico I was shocked at their way of living. Just seeing the buildings that they call home was enough. The roads were just as bad. Seeing these things for the first time was a he eye opener. The houses were practically falling apart. As we were driving through the town to get to my aunts house, I was thinking to myself â€Å"So this what my parents called home.† And at that moment I started to feel more thankful for everything I had back home. In Mexico I also realized that the value family over individualism. For example, after being at my aunt’s house for a while I asked my cousin if she ever planned to get married (that’s me knowing that she is already 32 years old). She replied to me â€Å"No I don’t, because then that would mean that I would have to move out with my husband and leave my parents.† I was completely shocked by this because I never thought of my parents in that way. In Mexico they find it shameful to put elderly people in nursing homes. This made me think â€Å"Would I be a horrible person if I dare to think of putting and older family member I a nursing home?† When I was in Mexico I was so surprised that I would have this part of a  culture shock. People in Mexico do almost the exact same thing that we do here for fun (depending on their money situations). They go to the movies, and parties and they go to the mall that they have there. Everyone in this world goes through culture shock at one point in his or her life. And it usually is with another culture completely different than theirs. Mine just happened to be the same as my culture. After experiencing this culture shock I felt like I wasn’t really connected to my roots and that I felt more â€Å"Americanized†. Just because I look ‘Mexican’ and speak Spanish and eat Mexican foods doesn’t make me like the people who live in Mexico. Seeing their infrastructure and the way they value family and how they spend their free time made the realize that its good to be different, because that way you can enlighten all kinds of people with your personal experiences.

How To Prepare The Students To Travel To Foreign Country

How To Prepare The Students To Travel To Foreign Country While preparing the students to trip, the teacher must think over the steps to be made to convince the students of the advantages of travelling. Thus, the first and most important issue is related to the experience which students can get while communicating with native speakers.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on How To Prepare The Students To Travel To Foreign Country? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In my opinion, the most important advantage for students is an opportunity to improve communication skills as well as to obtain some knowledge concerning culture peculiarities of other country. The teacher may point out that students who have an opportunity to visit foreign countries can get not only emotional experience, but also mental and social one. Social experience is related to customs and traditions which a person can become familiar with. Mental experience, in its turn, concerns with numerous cognitive processes which impact on intellect development. One more issue I would like to touch on concerns with the so-called subjective experience, which means the perception of other reality. Thus, the teacher is to explain his/her students that subjective experience appears when students interact with foreign environment. One should keep in mind that understanding other reality is also to be taken into consideration. Thus, the teacher is to explain the students that foreign reality means world views or beliefs which differ from the reality of their own nation. Another point I would like to draw your attention to is related to the notion of concept. Thus, the teacher is to explain that most concepts which students must take into account are related to the linguistic origin. For instance, it is a well-known fact that learning foreign languages is not an easy task, and in most cases the native speakers of English will not understand those who speak Russian. Thus, the main problem is not onl y the lack of practice, but some aspects which touch upon various countries mentality. So, the thing which is considered to be of primary importance is the teacher’s concentrating on the advantages which students are able to receive. The idea to show the students some documentary films seems to be rather attractive too. For instance, watching a film is considered to be a necessary step to provide students with some general/basic knowledge about the country they want/can visit. On the other hand, they can become familiar with the realities (traditions, customs) of other country. Some economic issues are also to be taken into account. Thus, the teacher must touch on certain contradictions concerning economic questions. Next step which the teacher is to draw his/her attention to concerns with educational quality improvement. Of course, nobody will deny the fact that direct communication with native speakers as well as feeling the atmosphere of foreign life can not be replaced by foreign literature reading/studying.Advertising Looking for critical writing on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In other words, the theory is considered to be a good thing, but practice is more important. Finally, there is a great opportunity to enlarge students’ knowledge about the history and geography of the country they are going to visit. Thus, the students are able to become familiar not only with the social history, but also with cultural and economic history. In some cases, military history as well as environmental one is also to be taken into account. The disadvantages are also to be touched on. Thus, the teacher is to describe some unpleasant situations which may occur while travelling.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Nutrigenomics

Advantages and Disadvantages of Nutrigenomics The word â€Å"Nutrigenomics† is a combination of nutrition and genomics. Nutrition is about the relationship between food and health; genomics is the study of entire genetic makeup of an organism and how they are expressed and regulated. Therefore, nutrigenomics is a field which concerned about the relationship between diet and gene expression by describing the approach to nutrition and human health that studies the implication of genetic differences in human response to food and how food alter the gene expression, biochemistry, metabolism and promotion of health (Elliot R, 2002). In other words, nutrigenomics is the study and application of gene and nutrition interaction. Besides, nutrigenomics also provides a basis for understanding the biological activity of food components (Rawson N, 2008). In addition, nutrigenomics has also been described by the influence of genetic variation on nutrition by correlate the gene expression with a nutrient’s absorption, metabolism and how it is eliminated from our body. In nutrigenomics, nutrients are seen as signals that are detected by a sensory system in the cell that tells the body cells about its environment (diet). Once the nutrient interacts with such system, it alters the gene, metabolite production and protein expression in depending on the level of nutrient it detected (Afman and Muller M, 2006). Hence, different diets will elicit different patterns of gene, protein expression and metabolite production. Such patterns of effects have been referred to as dietary signatures, where they are examined to investigate how homeostasis is influenced (Afman and Muller M, 2006). There are many ways on how nutrigenomics is useful to improve quality of life. Firstly, nutrigenomics define the causality relationship between specific nutrients and diet on human health by determining the mechanism of the effect of the nutrients or diet to human body. Besides, nutrigenomics helps to facilitate prevention through dieta ry modification when the diet-related diseases are detected in early stage. Nutrigenomics also allows the examination on how nutrients affect the genes present in the human genome. With all these reasons, nutrigenomics promotes and improves the understanding of people on how nutrition influence metabolic pathways and alter the homeostatic control in our body. Moreover, nutrigenomics is also able to demonstrate the impact of bioactive food compounds and its effect on human health, which should lead to the development of functional foods that will keep people healthy based to their individual needs. Then, this will further prevent development of chronic diet-related disease such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, nutrigenomics also involve in finding markers of the early phase of diet-related diseases. At this phase, intervention with nutrition approach can restore patient’s health. Once a marker has been found and measured in an indi vidual, the stage of susceptibility of the person to develop the diet-related diseases can be quantified and personalized dietary recommendation can be then given to that particular individual and further improve his or her quality of life. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the lifestyle diseases and it is the most common cause of death all over the world. In Malaysia, about 30% of deaths are caused by CVD (WHO, 2009). There are many factors that can lead to CVD. For example, elevated low density lipoprotein (LDL) level, low level of high density lipoprotein (HDL) and high level of total cholesterol. Diet has a significant effect on CVD. However, long term health benefits can be obtained from dietary proteins and bioactive non-nutrients, called phytochemicals, which could be either integrated into the diet or be part of the food itself. One of the foods that can be used to reduce the risk of getting CVD is soybean. Soybean contain soy protein and it contains phytoestrogens whic h bind to estrogen receptors in the body. Besides, soybean also contains high level of Isoflavones. There are three major isoflavones in soybeans which are genistein, daidzein and glycetein. Isoflavones have a non-steroidal structure. However, they possess a phenolic ring that enables them to bind the estrogen receptor and act either as estrogen agonists or antagonists (Makela et al., 1995).

Economic Analysis of China Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Economic Analysis of China - Research Paper Example The economy of the country has become one of the engines for growth since the country got enlisted in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The country emerged as the second largest economy at exchange rate of the market and the share in the output worldwide soared. The sudden emergence of the country has benefitted the globe but the other countries had to involve themselves in some adjustment processes to deal with the increase in the low skilled labor. The current account surplus for the country took the steep step with integration of the country into the global economy. The contribution of the country in global growth is increasing exponentially. The economic cycle of China has the potential to influence the rest of the World, with major influences on the OECD countries. The share of the imports of the country is increasing in the exports of the rest of the economies. The growth performance can be partly explained by the rapid expansion in the stock of capital as well as solid suffi ciency gains. The approach towards deficit as well as debts acted as the constraint for the recognition of the fiscal policy for a long time. Government deficits were absent in the period of 1958 to 1978. In the period of 1979 to 1993, foreign as well as domestic borrowing took place but mostly limited. The borrowing of the government became significant after the year 1993 and government debt took the rising curve which reached to 22% of GDP in the year 2007. In fact the country adopted the fiscal policy of expansionary type after the financial crisis in Asia. As a result there were considerable fiscal deficits. The deficit in the budget witnessed an increase from 0.7% of Gross domestic product in the year 1998 to 2.6% of GDP in 2000. The economy experienced a contraction in deficit which includes the extra budgetary funds as well as the funds for social security. There were positive

Successful life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Successful life - Essay Example At my house, we were four children, my parents and more often than not my grandmother would visit. This meant the house was always crowded and somewhat noisy, for me this was annoying and made me eager for college so that I could move out and go be on my own, in quiet. Nonetheless, this attitude transformed when I began college and within the first year I learnt that Mr Raphaels’ wellbeing had spun for worse. I had to make new friends and adapt to new surroundings, this made me miss the familiarity of home. Mr. Raphaels had been admitted to a rehabilitation centre as he had become an alcoholic. It occurred to me that a successful life is not guaranteed by material things and being alone is quite miserable. In my opinion, a successful life is achieved through contentment and fulfillment that are complementary feelings generated from within; whereby contentment implies accepting and appreciating the situation one is in, good health, social ties family being paramount and spiritu ality. These three things, from an individual viewpoint, allow us to realize success as a constant achievement. First and foremost, success is dependent on social ties because as human beings social connection is a prime need. Social ties allude to the rapport we have with our kin, friends, neighbors and colleagues. We need to maintain fruitful relationships that satisfy that basic need for connection, where we not only seek to keep ourselves happy but also those that are around us. Family is a key factor because they know us best and have supported us throughout our lives, that is, since childhood till presently. Hence, we ought to learn to be appreciative and tolerate them; moreover, the friends we keep are essential in our success as they either lead us to positive outcomes or negative outcomes. One should encircle themselves with people that inspire, support and complement. When we are vulnerable for example because of illness or frustrations from school, we will need someone to support us. As we go about our everyday life, we must treat people with respect and be humble because we are equal as human beings. Besides that, it is important that we adapt a sense of charity towards the less fortunate. Nothing is more rewarding than giving; it brings a sense of fulfillment which is the essence of success, as it breeds contentment. Spirituality, being the second crucial factor that guarantees success, requires that we develop a sense of mastery of ourselves. This implies discovering ourselves with regard to our weaknesses and strengths. As soon as we accept these, we can better our weaknesses and magnify our strengths. Self-mastery becomes significant because we train ourselves to accept that which we cannot change and improve that which we can, all through guidance. This requires that we adapt a different attitude and behavior towards life to this reality. Nevertheless, we should be careful not to develop a bleak perspective towards life. We must have hope, rem aining optimistic, as this provides us with a renewed strength whenever we feel overwhelmed by life. Of significance as well, is recognizing that when seeking pleasure we must choose pleasures that are deep and lingering. Not forgetting, having a charitable spirit as this provides a deep rewarding feeling. Thirdly, we must ensure that we are healthy in terms of

Internet gaming is a politically charged issue in the United States Essay

Internet gaming is a politically charged issue in the United States and elsewhere - Essay Example Internet gaming is a politically charged issue in the United States and elsewhere Especially since the Act is only for operators and it doesn’t take into account foreign owned internet games, it isn’t efficient and doesn’t work well. However, the conclusion it seems is to do a cost benefit analysis of its benefits and risks and weigh them against each other to decide and make an informed call as to whether internet gambling should be legal, or regulated. Apart from internet gambling, there are many other types of internet games that have posed problems in the past and present. Casino games and other games left to chance such as the lottery are called ‘games of chance.’ And no federal law specifically prohibits casino games and there are regulations in many states that are pending or have not been passed, and it is allowed openly in Nevada except in the case of non-house banked poker. There are also no open laws in every state against lotteries and therefore they are continued. Other online applications such as Apple’s came on the Iphone based on Foxconn was removed because it led to suicide, and this is an explanation as to why this industry is a politically loaded one. This suicide raised questions about whose responsibility it was; Apple’s because it invented the Iphone and the game? Or the government because it was supposed to enact the laws that weren’t even widely understood? Such issues make it difficult to take these situations in hand especially if it has led to an incident such as a suicide already; then one can only do damage control.

Reflection On Interpersonal Skills In Clinical Practice

Reflection On Interpersonal Skills In Clinical Practice This is a reflective essay based on my experiences whilst on my five week surgical placement in a local hospital. The aim of this essay is to explore the use of communication and interpersonal skills in clinical practice. I have chosen this particular incident as I spent a considerable amount of time communicating verbally and non verbally with this particular patient. To protect the identity and maintain confidentiality of the patient I have chosen to discuss they shall be known as John, this is accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct (2008). To assist me in the process of reflection I will be using Gibbs (1988) reflective model. The structure of this framework allows the reflection to be written in a clear way, which provides opportunities to look at the incident from a number of perspectives; this will help to highlight areas of practice which could be changed in the future (Jasper, 2003). There are numerous reasons why reflection is important to nurses. Through refle ction we can get to know more about what we do and what limits our abilities and this gives the opportunity to improve the way we care (Ghaye and Lillyman, 2001). Description John was a 74 year old man admitted onto the ward from the emergency department 2 days previous to me starting my first late shift of that week. He had been suffering from retention of urine, and was in considerable pain. My mentor and I were informed during handover that we would be looking after John on this particular shift and could we change the dressing on his right leg as he had an ulcerated leg due to suffering from a condition known as Peripheral Vascular Disease (Alexander el al, 2004). As a consequence of this disease he also had his left leg amputated below the knee some years ago and mobilised using a wheelchair. It became clear during the handover that John had been very difficult the last couple of days. The nurse in charge went on to say that he had thrown items across his room and was constantly pressing his nurse call button and shouting all day, he had also refused to have a wash and change his pyjamas. As we left the room where the handover had taken place, my men tor said she thought that we should change Johns dressing now but first we should get him washed and changed and could I assist her. We gathered all the equipment we needed from the treatment room and made our way to Johns room. I knocked on his door and introduced myself as a student nurse, I then asked John for his consent for me to assist him in having a wash and change of clothing (NMC, 2008). John was sat on his bed, he appeared to be quite tense, he looked up at me and shouted no, I want to see a doctor and I havent had a cigarette for 2 days. I explained that I was here to assist in changing the dressing on his leg and to help him to have a wash and change. I moved closer towards his bed and lowered myself to his eye level. I then began to engage in conversation with him by maintaining a soft tone of voice and asking him if he would like a cup of tea after we had finished. His body language softened and he looked up and smiled, he said I would love one. I smiled back at John, I then repeated the question of assisting him with having a wash and change, whilst maintaining a relaxed posture and eye contact with him. John gave me his consent and I proceeded to assist him in maintaining his personal hygiene with respect and dignity (NMC, 2008). With Johns co operation my mentor and I were then able to go on and change his dressing on his leg. Feelings Through this learning experience I encountered different feelings towards the situation. From the initial handover, the staff nurse in charge did not paint a positive picture of John. I wondered why this particular patient was so aggressive and demanding and the staff described him as being difficult. I felt anxious, as this was my first placement as a first year student and I did not feel experienced enough to deal with the situation. During my encounter with John it became clear why he would feel so angry and frustrated. I noticed he didnt have a wheelchair in his room, and it became apparent that he was a smoker. He also hadnt been given any nicotine replacement therapy to help him cope with his withdrawal symptoms. When the full extent of Johns situation became clear to me, I felt immense frustration for him. According to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct (2008), nurses should treat patients with respect and maintain their dignity. With John not having a wheelchair, he was con fined to his bed and therefore had lost his autonomy. The situation also made me very angry, reflecting back I feel I should have been more assertive and maybe questioned why Johns requests had been ignored by the staff. Evaluation It was a shame that the professional staff acted the way that they did, ignoring how angry and frustrated John had become and not acting upon it. The nurses compassion and communication skills seemed to be very much lacking, not listening to his requests and showing no feeling towards him. This breakdown in communication in the nurse patient relationship with john, left him feeling frustrated and not in control of his own wellbeing (Garnham, 2001). At first, I could not see any good points in this situation; however looking back I can see that it did have its positive side, in as much as allowing me to examine myself and to search for my short fallings in relation to the incident. The incident has also given me the opportunity to link theory to practice. The way I communicated with John had a positive outcome for both of us in that his personal hygiene needs were met, and I learnt that effective communication is essential in building a trusting bond between the patient and the nurse (Almond Yardley, 2009). The bad points of this experience were that I judged John based on the information I received during handover without meeting him first. This could have created a barrier between myself and the patient. Accepting a patient as a unique individual and without judgment is very important in the communication process. I have learnt from this experience that as nurses we should respect a patients beliefs and values, and we should not let our own beliefs and values affect our decision making in patient care (Rogers, 1957). I also feel I should have been more assertive when it came to the way John was being treated by the staff. As a first year student I did not feel comfortable questioning the way a professional staff nurse carried out her nursing care. However, from this experience I will question bad practice in future, as the NMC (2008) states that I am personally accountable for my actions and omissions in my practice and I must always be able to justify my decisions. Analysis According to Briggs (2006) as cited in compendium of clinical skills Communication is the process of conveying information between two or people. Communication is essential in building relationships with patients and gaining trust. In the NHS the majority of the complaints brought against them were for poor communication from healthcare staff (Pincock 2004). To highlight how important communication is in the nursing profession, the NMC identified it as being an essential skill and only if a student is competent in this skill can they then go on and register as a nurse (NMC 2007b). In order to communicate with John the situation required the use of interpersonal skills, known as non verbal and verbal communication. Non verbal communication is described by lister and dogherty p62 as being information transmitted without speaking. Johns body language indicated that he was tense and anxious therefore approaching him with empathy ensured that he is being understood and that his participation in communication was valued (Peate 2006)nurs 21st. Given the history of Johns aggressive outbursts it was necessary to consider the proxemics in the situation. It is recommended that keeping within a distance of 4 to 12 feet away from a person is less intimidating for them (Egan 2002). In order to engage in conversation with John, Egans (2002) acronym SOLER was used. This is a process of using body language to actively listen to a person. By sitting squarely towards John, having an open posture, leaning in towards him, maintaining eye contact and maintaining a relaxed posture, encouraged him to relax and feel less intimidated and therefore talk more openly (Lister and Dougherty). Verbal communication with John was enhanced by the use of facial expression and paraverbal communication. (Fund Nursing p195) states that Facial expressions give clues that support, contradict or disguise the verbal message, therefore the use of a smile when approaching John indicated warmth and friendliness. This was assisted further by the use of para communication; these are the cues that accompany verbal language. These include tone, pitch, speed and volume of the person speaking, therefore by communicating with John with a soft tone of voice added further meaning to the spoken words (fund nurs). The barriers in communication during this incident were Johns aggressiveness. This could have been due to the withdrawal from cigarettes, as according to Bruce (2008) irritability is a symptom of nicotine withdrawal. If a patient is unable to smoke in hospital then nicotine replacement therapy should be introduced and the patient treated like any other dependant. Bruce (2008) suggests that Withdrawal from nicotine needs to be recognised and treated appropriately in the acute hospital and it will often be the ward nurses who are relied on to recognise the symptoms. These symptoms were overlooked by the staff and to add to his frustration he had no means of mobility to be able to leave the ward for a cigarette. This may account for his outbursts of anger. Peplau (2004) suggests that when there is an obstacle or obstruction preventing a person from achieving their goals this may lead to frustration which in turn often leads to anger. Action Plan Using Gibbss reflective cycle has assisted me in making sense of the situation and to put things into perspective, recognising how I can put this learning experience to positive use in my future practice as a Nursing professional. If this situation were to arise again I know I would now have the courage to question the nurses attitude at an earlier stage pointing out that bad practice by anyone is not acceptable. From this experience I have learnt that I need to be more assertive and if I feel the needs of a patient are not being met, my first consideration should be to protect the interests and safety of patients, in line with the NMC (2002) Code of Professional Conduct, (clause 8). This reflection has highlighted the need to increase my knowledge and understanding of the process of communicating with patients from different cultural backgrounds, I will address these issues by, listening and learning from the qualified staff and by reading relevant literature. Conclusion In conclusion it can be seen that the nurse has a very important role in communicating with patients through their treatment. When a patient is admitted to hospital, assessments should be made based on the activities of daily living, Roper, Logan Tierney (2000). Johns assessment not only should have identified the level of care needed, it should also have established his normal routine, and the fact that he was a smoker and required a wheelchair for mobility. If Johns needs had been assessed correctly the breakdown in the relationship between John and the professional staff could have been prevented. Overall, through this reflection I have learnt that communication is an essential skill that requires as much practice and consideration as any other aspect of nursing.
